Now, I realize that Eric Roberts isn’t exactly a top of mind actor. Today, he’s probably best known as Julia Roberts’ older brother. But at one time, he was the hot new thing in Hollywood. For a lot of reasons, his career didn’t go as far as it should have. But now, he has settled into his later career and is keeping very busy—which for an older actor, isn’t easy.
I read an article about him a while back and I instantly recognized myself in it. But it was more than that. I realized we are kindred spirits, soul brothers if you will, because how he stays busy is how I stay busy.
Early on, he took leading man roles in films like The Pope of Greenwich Village and Star 80. Now he takes on anything and everything. In 2018, he did 74 films in a single year. 74! And he did it in all kinds of roles: leading man, bit player, continuing character.
Which is eerily similar to what I do. Sometimes, I’m the lead and other times, I’m a walk-on. In the past couple of years, I have helped a multibillion dollar health insurance company launch a sub-brand, and I’ve also written email blast subject lines.
I worked on American Express’ last global campaign launch, including the anthem TV spot, and I’ve also done a couple of hours writing SEO copy. As they say, no job too big or too small.
That’s important to me, because I’ve had some people not reach out because they thought a project was beneath me. When I hear that, I channel my inner Eric Roberts and say “ain’t no such thing.”
So the next time you need great acting, give Eric a call. He’ll probably squeeze you in. For the advertising stuff, think of me.
