Advertising forgets its heroes.
For an industry that supposedly worships creative work, it’s almost impossible to find the ads of the people who led the way. As we lose more creative giants such as Cliff Freeman and George Lois, there’s almost no way to enjoy their classic work, other than some grainy videos on YouTube and crappy ad scans on Pinterest.
So I took it upon myself to fix it for the creative legend (and my first advertising mentor) Roy Grace. Besides being part of the legendary 1960-70s era Doyle Dane Bernbach creative department, he is a member of both the One Club and Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. This site is full of examples of his amazing work from both the DDB and Grace & Rothschild eras.
The site is also full of commentary and memories from people who worked with him over the years, including talented peers such as Diane Rothschild, Evan Stark and Susan Calhoun Moss, and proteges like Gary Goldsmith.
I also went full Peter Jackson, found the best versions, cleaned things up, and had the videos recolorized and dedusted. I can safely say that VW Funeral and Spicy Meatball have never looked better. I hope it keeps Roy’s incredible work alive for future generations.
And I hope it sparks a trend. It’d be great to have tribute sites to Helmut Krone, Cliff Freeman, etc. Somebody, please get on that. In the meantime, I hope you like the Roy Grace website. There’s a lot of great work in there.
